The Blue Lines Crew took a weekend trip to Grand Lake and the western gates of Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s not quite the tourist season yet, with a lot of snow lingering on the slopes above town and most of the businesses on the main drag still shuttered. Trail Ridge Road is still closed, and our one attempt to hike to higher altitude water ended when the Onatu Trail disappeared beneath a thick layer of slushy snow. A quick hike to a new stream turned into an eight mile round-trip hike in waders and boots. Not the best situation but still a good wearability test for my new Redington Prowler boots and SonicPro waders. The final opinion? Damn good purchases, the both of them.
So what to do when all the streams we went looking for are inaccessible or a torrent of chocolate milk? Fish the beaver ponds along Highway 34. Redemption was found in a clear back cast and a small crowd of picky brookies who were rising to drys.
